I was thinking about getting a greenhouse for the winter. I need a place to get out and feel the sun without freezing my face off. I've seen this happen before with a friends greenhouse. He went on the cheap side and now he is paying in heating cost. He covered his greenhouse with plastic and used bubble wrap on the inside. This cut the cost in half but still was too much for me. I think I'll save up for the higher quality one. Thanks for sharing your info.

Hi, great job on your blog, a lot of good ideas for incorporating the technology side. I have never had a green house, but some thoughts I have had on keeping it warm would be to have one wall made of a large solar water tank. Basically the sun would hit the tank of water that is painted black, which hopefully would help retain some of the heat. Or maybe incorporate some of those solar water heaters and run the water tubing around the floor of the green house. I don't know what would happen if it got so cold those tubes froze, but it is an idea.

Another thing you may think about trying is a mirror to reflect the sun towards the green house or solar water heater or a Fresnel lens setup above the green house that can also direct additional heat in the winter.

Anyway thanks for sharing your experience and keep up the good work.

I also like the idea of incorporating the technology into the green house setting. Do you think you could point me in the right direction to have a set up similar to yours with the I/O hardware and the software to monitor it? I have watched your you tube video and it is awesome. Thanks

Randall, The automation software/hardware is something that I designed myself so it's not available for sale (yet). There are a few greenhouse automation systems that are available, but they aren't cheap! Keep an eye on my blog or youtube channel and perhaps someday I'll have a solution that anyone can use. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
